Marine Engine and Watercraft Winterizing Steps
\Flush the Cooling System: Flush the engine's cooling system with fresh water to remove any salt or debris. This helps prevent corrosion.
Drain Water from the Engine: Drain all water from the engine's cooling system, including the block, exhaust manifolds, and water pumps.
Change the Oil: Change the engine oil and oil filter. Old oil can contain contaminants that may cause damage during storage.
Stabilize the Fuel System: Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank and run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilized fuel circulates through the system. This helps prevent fuel deterioration and carburetor clogs.
Fog the Engine: Spray fogging oil into the engine's intake while it's running. This coats the internal components and prevents corrosion during storage.
Disconnect the Battery: Remove the boat's battery, clean the terminals, and store it in a cool, dry place. Consider using a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep it charged.
Inspect Belts and Hoses: Check belts, hoses, and other engine components for signs of wear or damage.
Clean and Lubricate: Clean the engine and other components, removing any dirt, grime, or salt residue. Lubricate moving parts as needed to prevent rust and ensure they operate smoothly.
Check Propellers and Outdrive: Inspect and clean the propeller, outdrive, and shaft. Grease the fittings and remove any debris.
Drain Water Systems: Drain all water from the boat's freshwater and plumbing systems, including the water tanks, lines, and faucets. Use compressed air to blow out any remaining water.
Close Seacocks and Drain Plugs: Close all seacocks to prevent water from entering the boat. Remove drain plugs from the hull, including those in the bilge and livewell.
Inspect and Prepare Safety Equipment: Check and replenish safety equipment such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits. Ensure they are in good working condition.
Document and Secure: Take inventory of your boat's equipment and document any maintenance or repairs needed before the next boating season. Store valuable items securely.
Proper winterization will help extend the life of your marine engine and ensure a trouble-free boating season when spring arrives.
